The latest addition to the Native lineage is the Lightweight Spyderco Native 5 Folding Knife, which combines the Native 5’s engineering refinements with the weight-saving advantages of an injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle.

Blade Material and Features

Proudly manufactured in Golden, Colorado, the Native 5 features a spear point blade made from premium CPM S30V stainless steel. Its full-flat grind, distal taper, textured index-finger choil and thumb ramp, and understated swedge collectively offer a distinctive appearance and outstanding edge geometry and point utility.

Back Lock Mechanism

The blade is supported by a highly refined back lock mechanism that takes this time-tested lock design and elevates it to a new standard of engineering and manufacturing excellence.

FRN Handle

The linerless FRN handle features Bi-Directional Texturing for an ultra-secure grip and reduces the overall weight of the knife to a scant 2.5 ounces. The handle also houses four sets of threaded inserts molded directly into the FRN. These allow the improved hourglass clip to be positioned for left or right-side tip-up or tip-down carry. A generously sized lanyard hole also provides a handy attachment point for lanyards, fobs, and safety lines.

It's been speculated the sheepfoot-shaped blade originated with mariners who found the rounded tip especially beneficial when the knife was accidentally dropped (think working on a ship in pitching seas) as it couldn't stab the foot when hitting the deck. It's also been hypothesized that commanding officers on these ships preferred rambunctious, hardworking sailors to carry knives without pointed tips, especially while in port blowing off steam after months at sea. Spyderco's Rescue knives are long favored by seafarers, and the design has since been embraced by rescue workers, EMTs, and ranchers - anyone cutting around flesh in an emergency. The Spyderco Atlantic Salt Folding Knife is a modified Rescue made with state-of-the-art, ultra-corrosion-resistant H-1 steel. The hollow-ground blade is available in SpyderEdge, offering remarkable cutting performance in and around fresh and saltwater. The molded FRN handle, which includes a shackle key, is available in bright yellow and features a reversible black-coated titanium pocket clip for tip-up carry on either the left or right side. Spyderco recommends threading a thong or lanyard cord through the lanyard hole for backup retention around water, where once dropped, a knife is often irretrievable or lost. It has a 3.68 inch blade with a 4.59 inch FRN handle.
